- DeSales’ mathematics program has different tracks which allows students to focus on areas of interest. You can also easily add a double major or minor and finish within a four-year time frame.
Personal Support
- Mathematics majors benefit from small class sizes with no more than 30 in lower-level courses and less than 15-20 in upper level courses. Each student receives an academic advisor within our department to help guide them through their time at DeSales.

Mathematics majors can work with the education department to become certified in teaching mathematics at the secondary level. This certification takes place through the 4+1 program where students will earn a BS in Mathematics as well as M.Ed and certification in 5 years.

Actuarial science and data science share a foundation in data analysis and quantitative methods, but differ in their core objectives and application areas. Actuaries focus on assessing financial risk, particularly in insurance, pensions, and investments, using statistical and probability-based models. Data scientists, on the other hand, extract insights from large data sets using machine learning and artificial intelligence, applying these understandings across diverse industries to solve business problems.
Yes, each major will get assigned a mathematics faculty member to serve as their academic advisor. Your advisor will help you in selecting courses based on your interests and career goals, ensuring that they meet degree requirements. In addition, your advisor will act as a mentor in helping you navigate your academic journey here at DeSales.
Yes, the department annually selects several first-year students as Bede Scholars. These students receive scholarship money up to $2500/year for each of their four years here at DeSales. Only incoming Mathematics or Computer Science majors are eligible to receive the award. Students accepted into one of these programs will be selected to interview for the scholarship based on criteria including grade point average and a short essay submission.
Quite a few of our math students have graduated with a double major within the typical four-year time span. Recent majors have coupled the math degree with a variety of other ones including Computer Science, Accounting, Dance, and Neuroscience. Additionally, many of our math majors pursue minors in other disciplines. This option is less encompassing than the double major but still gives students knowledge and skill in areas of interest and may help with future career opportunities. Some typical minors include Data Analytics, Economics, Sport Management, Business, and Computer Science.
